The Weimar File by Vik Muniz

September 13, 2012

This photo is part of a collection titled “The Weimar File”, by Vik Muniz.  This collection holds four hundred and forty-five black and white photos, some of which were recreated others were taken for use.  These photos represent East German police files after WWI, and a statement is made for each photo.  This particular photo is of a homemade bomb taken to provoke the paranoia of German society during this time.  The old feel of these photos are used to recreate the authentic images that were captured during The German Weimar Republic after Germany’s defeat in WWI.  The Weimar Republic lasted only 14 years before German parliament elected Adolph Hitler to come to power.  Muniz recreated photographs to resemble the fear and authority taking place in the nation.  He also acquired historic photos and adjusted or edited them for the purpose of his political statement.
