The American Institute of Graphic Arts or the AIGA is the oldest and largest professional membership organization for design. It was founded in 1914 with the mission to advance designing as a professional craft, strategic tool and vital cultural force. As the infographic shows, the AIGA has 66 chapters and over 22,000 members.
The chapters and national programs offer many benefits. They work to inform about the best practices, standards for ethical conduct, and standards for professional expertise, communicate the importance of design’s to the public and business leaders, inspire designers through articles, online galleries, profiles, videos, and exhibitions, represent the profession through the network of chapters and the student groups, and to stimulate the discussion of the industry through events, social media, and websites.
The AIGA represents designers ranging from book and type design to interactive and experience design. There are different membership levels you can become a part of.
